South American Farm - Punta Arenas, Chile

Alpacas de la Patagonia was originally founded in the heart of the Patagonia region of Chile in the city of Punta Arenas. Punta Arenas is located on the western shore of the Strait of Magellan (Magallanes).
Rounding up the Alpacas The tip of the South American continent is a rugged, stormy, and harsh area of many islands, glaciers, mountains and icebergs. Accessible only by air or sea, unless you detour through Argentina, Punta Arenas is the most southern city in the world and the departure gate for Antarctica! Punta Arenas first prospered during the California gold rush. Later the city became the capital of Chile's wool industry. Some of the richest wool fortunes on the continent were made here. Today rams from this region are in high demand and are shipped all over the world for tens of thousands of dollars apiece. It is also home to thousands of guanacos, the wild species from which the llama was domesticated, as well as several colonies of penguins. Although the business of raising alpacas in this region developed recently, the National Institute of Agricultural Investigations (INIA) has, after conducting thorough investigative studies, declared this region to be the most superior region in the country for this activity. Our focus at this ranch is to further expand the alpaca fiber industry, introducing it as an alternative to the sheep farmers of this region. Situated on our southern farm is a fully equipped, government- approved quarantine facility. With the use of this facility we are able to export alpacas around the world. Our latest project was the successful exportation of the first alpacas to Asia. (Click for export and quarantine information.)
